SEO vs AEO vs GEO vs AIO: What’s the Difference (and Which Does Your Business Need)?
Four acronyms, one goal: being found. Here’s what SEO, AEO, GEO and AIO each mean, how they overlap, and where to start.

If you’ve spoken to a marketer in the last year, you’ve probably heard at least three new acronyms. SEO was hard enough to explain — now there’s AEO, GEO and AIO too. Are they real disciplines or just new labels for the same old work?
The honest answer: they’re related, they overlap, and each one targets a different place where customers now look for answers. Here’s a plain-English guide.
The short version
| Acronym | Stands for | Goal | Where it shows up |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | Search Engine Optimization | Rank your pages | Google and Bing search results |
| AEO | Answer Engine Optimization | Be the direct answer | Featured snippets, “People also ask”, voice assistants |
| GEO | Generative Engine Optimization | Get mentioned and cited by AI | ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, Perplexity |
| AIO | AI Optimization | Appear in AI features inside search | Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, AI agents |
SEO: still the foundation
Search Engine Optimization is the work of helping search engines crawl, understand and rank your website. It covers technical health (speed, indexing, mobile usability), content that matches what people search for, and authority — other reputable sites referencing you.
SEO hasn’t gone away. In fact, Google’s own documentation says that to appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in regular Search with a snippet. No SEO, no AI visibility on Google.
AEO: become the answer
Answer Engine Optimization focuses on questions. Instead of asking “how do we rank for this keyword?”, AEO asks “when someone asks this question, will our answer be the one that gets shown?”
Good AEO looks like:
- Researching the real questions customers ask — from “People also ask” boxes, forums, reviews and your own sales calls.
- Answering each question clearly in the first 40–60 words, then adding depth.
- Using headings, lists and tables so answers are easy to extract.
- Adding structured data so machines understand what each page is about.
AEO is especially powerful for businesses whose buyers research before they contact anyone: clinics, education, finance, legal, B2B services.
GEO: get recommended by AI assistants
Generative Engine Optimization is about AI tools that write answers — ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity. The term comes from a 2023 research paper by researchers at Princeton University and IIT Delhi.
That study tested different ways of rewriting content and measured how visible it became inside AI-generated answers. Adding citations, quotations from relevant sources and statistics improved visibility by up to 40%. Keyword stuffing — the old SEO trick — performed worse than making no changes at all.
The scale is why this matters. OpenAI reported in February 2026 that ChatGPT had passed 900 million weekly users, and many of those conversations are people asking what to buy, which tool to use or who to hire.
GEO work typically includes testing buyer prompts across AI assistants, publishing fact-rich content, earning mentions on the websites those assistants draw from, and keeping your brand information consistent everywhere.
AIO: win inside Google’s AI features
AIO is used to mean both “AI Optimization” and “AI Overviews optimization”. Either way, the focus is on AI experiences inside search platforms — above all Google’s AI Overviews, which Google said at I/O 2026 now reach more than 2.5 billion monthly users, and AI Mode, which has passed 1 billion.
These features matter because they change click behavior. A Pew Research Center study of real browsing data found Google users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% when one didn’t. If you’re not one of the few sources linked inside the summary, you can lose visibility even while “ranking”.
Google is clear that there’s no secret tag or special schema for AI Overviews. AIO is about excellent fundamentals: eligible pages, depth that answers follow-up questions, accurate business and product data, and a fast, usable site.
How they fit together
Think of it as a stack:
- SEO makes sure you can be found and trusted at all.
- AEO shapes your expertise into clear, quotable answers.
- AIO gets those answers surfaced inside Google’s AI features.
- GEO extends your visibility into standalone AI assistants and earns the third-party mentions they rely on.
And social media sits alongside all four. Communities, creator content and conversations on platforms like YouTube, LinkedIn and Reddit are part of how people — and increasingly AI models — form opinions about brands.
Which one should you start with?
- Your website has technical problems or thin content: start with SEO.
- You rank, but competitors own the answer boxes: add AEO.
- Your topic triggers AI Overviews and clicks are falling: prioritize AIO.
- Buyers ask AI for recommendations in your category: invest in GEO.
